Adjournment: Route 48 Tram

Mr T SMITH (Kew) (17:10): (5945) On indulgence, if I could return the favour to my friend the member for Broadmeadows and wish him an enjoyable break. God knows where we will be allowed to travel to, but hopefully somewhere further afield than what is currently the case.

My adjournment matter this evening is for the Minister for Transport Infrastructure, and if this is not a matter for the Minister for Transport Infrastructure, I assume it will be a matter for the Minister for Public Transport. The action I seek from the Andrews Labor government is for them to extend the 48 tram route from the corner of Balwyn Road and Doncaster Road in my electorate to Greythorn Road. The people of the area of North Balwyn called Greythorn do not have access to a tram. It finishes at Balwyn Road, and it would be terrific if that tram could be extended past the Greythorn shops.

Mr Angus: Save you walking too.

Mr T SMITH: Indeed. The member for Forest Hill knows the area very well, as do his parents. It is important that public transport connection essentially goes as far towards Doncaster as possible, and that is why I am raising this issue tonight. I think that 48 tram route should be extended past the Greythorn shops down to Greythorn Road, potentially to the freeway, because those people need access to that tram route. As my friend the member for Forest Hill suggests, trudging up the hill to Balwyn Road every day means that they essentially do not use that tram route, and that is a shame. So I put that on the agenda and will await a response from the appropriate minister in the government.
